The Importance of Rubber Dam in Dental Practice: A Comparison of Conventional and New Systems

In dentistry, rubber dam is a crucial tool that has been used for many years to protect the patient's oral cavity and to improve the quality of dental treatment. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), over 90% of dental professionals use rubber dam in their practices. However, the conventional rubber dam system, introduced by Barnum in 1869, is not always well received by patients and dentists. To address this issue, new rubber dam systems have been developed, such as the OptraDam® by Ivoclar Vivadent, which promises to be more comfortable and user-friendly.

To determine if the new rubber dam system would be better accepted, a study was conducted by the Department of Conservative Dentistry and Periodontology. Two hundred patients received treatment with both the conventional rubber dam and the new rubber dam system. Afterwards, patients, dentists, and students were asked to fill out a questionnaire evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of each system.

The results of the study showed that there is a high degree of acceptance of rubber dam in general and only a few situations where neither system could be used. Despite the promise of a more comfortable and user-friendly design, the conventional rubber dam system was preferred by all patients, dentists, and students (p<0.0001).

In conclusion, the high degree of acceptance of rubber dam confirms their importance in dental practice. The refusal to use it in daily practice may have nothing to do with the material or design available, but the reasons remain unclear. Our study shows that a new design does not necessarily mean better acceptance.
